Canine Good Citizen
Creating well-mannered dogs and encouraging responsible dog ownership. We want to ensure our dogs can be respected members of our community in our homes and public places. Canine Good Citizen is a nationally moderated Dogs New Zealand (was New Zealand Kennel Club) initiated program open to all dogs 12 months or older. Nelson Dog Training Club membership is not a requirement.
CANINE GOOD BASICS
Criteria – Over 4 months old.
Course Duration – 7 weeks.
Course Content – Taking a treat nicely, collar hold, handling & grooming, responding to name, touched by a stranger, accepting other dogs, coming when called, walking on a lead, sitting or lying down on command, 30 second stay with handler.
Cost - $25 for club member, $60 for non-member.
Time – Saturday 1.00pm.
What can you achieve? - Be added to a National register for dogs qualified for Canine Good Basics.
Where to after that? - CGC Foundation. For CGC there are four levels as below. More information is available at Dogs New Zealand.
CANINE GOOD CITIZEN FOUNDATION
Criteria - Some basic obedience training. Dogs must be over 12 months old.
Course Duration – customised to suit participants.
Course Content – Appearance & grooming, food manners, accepting friendly strangers, walking in controlled manner with distractions and through people, stays and control around other dogs, short multi-choice exam.
Cost - No cost, but must be a club member.
Time – Saturday 12.30pm.
Where to after that? – Run concurrently with CGC Bronze and then onto Silver and Gold.
